Night In: A Smoked Old Fashioned and the City’s Best Takeout Pairing
A two-drink cocktail project plus the Murray Hill takeout order that beats most sit-down dinners.
Some Fridays the correct venue is your own couch. Here's the program.
The drink
Smoked-ish Old Fashioned (no torch required)
- 2 oz bourbon (100 proof if you have it)
- 1 tsp demerara syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura, 1 dash orange bitters
- 1 drop liquid smoke — a drop, off a toothpick
Stir over one big cube for 20 seconds. Orange peel, expressed and dropped in. The liquid smoke trick sounds like a crime and tastes like a $16 downtown pour.
The food
Call in a Murray Hill Taqueria order: four al pastor, two jackfruit, chips, both salsas. It travels shockingly well — the tortillas hold up for the full drive home. Queue up something slow and atmospheric and let the night be easy.
